It might seem difficult enough coming up with one content marketing concept, assigning it a budget, getting it approved by upper management, and then implementing it effectively. It’s quite another thing to do so through multiple channels with multiple ideas simultaneously.
But that’s what’s needed in order to succeed in the marketing world in 2015.
There are a few best practices that can make the work easier on you. Pratik Dholakiya, co-founder of E2M and MoveoApps, is also a content marketer. He said, “I can attest to the fact that it’s difficult to get on top of each and every activity that is a part of content marketing. There are some activities that will come naturally to you as a content marketer, while there are others you need to remember.”
Research your competition
You’ll spend a lot of time figuring out your own campaign, but it’s a good idea to take a look at what others in the field are doing, as well. They may have come across a strategy that will work for you, with some personalization. There’s nothing wrong with getting your inspiration from what’s already available on the web.
“For example,” Dholakiya said, “say you have ignored making visuals an intrinsic part of your content marketing plan, but when you do take a look at the content marketing campaign run by your competitors, you realize visual content is working for them.” If you’ve hesitated before because the strategy was unproven and new, this might give you the impetus you need to start doing it for yourself.
Distribute more non-branded material
It might seem counter-intuitive that publishing more non-branded material could help improve the ROI on your content marketing, but Dholakiya said the positive results you’ll get will surprise you. If you spend too much time writing just about your product, people won’t follow your blog or “like” your social media page. They don’t want to sign up for more marketing to be pushed at them. Instead, Dholakiya said, gain a more loyal following by “identifying the problems [your brand’s audience]are searching to solve, and then delivering solutions through high quality content.”
Innovate more
When you feel like you’ve been writing in a rut, take a step back from your game plan and see what you can do to freshen your approach. Is there a new social media platform whose services you haven’t explored? Is there a new technique for email marketing you haven’t considered? If your own writing feels stale to you, it definitely will to a consumer, so be sure you quit while you’re ahead.
