Topic: Brick wall on RCC slab

Hi Sir,

I have started construction of first floor above my father's ground floor house. My father's house is built on 9" red bricks walls with RCC slab. It does not have any columns or beams but has solid deep foundation of stones and RCC. I have taken serivce of an qualified architect to design the first floor. All the walls of first floor are on walls of ground floor (due to absense of coulmns and beams).

I have a question only for one wall which is purely on the RCC slab of groung floor "varandah". This balcony wall is 8.5' in length and of 9" thick bricks. This wall is having one window of 6x4.5' as well. The height of the wall would be 10.5'. All the walls of first floor would be non-load bearing becuase we'll have iron sheets roof (not RCC roof) on first floor.

Could you please share your thoughts that is it safe to have this wall on RCC slab?

Thanks

Rajiv

Dear Sharma
You should construct this wall 4.5'' thick to minimize the load on the slab.
The 2nd option is lay 9'' wide and 9'' high beam under the wall to be constructed and beam load goes to the side walls of rooms already constructed.

Hello Sir,

Thnaks for your guidance. We'll have 4.5" wall. Also I wanted to ask one more question. Since the ground floor does not have columns/beams, our engineer planned the first floor walls exactly on the walls of ground floor. Some people are also suggesting to have beams below the walls of first floor. Is it necessay to have beams below the walls or its ok becuase walls are on walls of ground floor.

Regards

Rajiv

Keep walls on walls or take a beam below any new wall constructing.

If you make wall above wall, then no need of extra beam at bottom. beam will obstruct at door.

Dear Sharma
There is no need of beam on the wall as the load is taken by the ground floor wall.
