Join date: Nov 2013 | Dear Sir , Needed a clarification. I have attached the GF plan for reference and have extended the same columns for first floor plan and now want to go for partial second floor. All brick work and RCC roofing for GF and FF are completed and now starting work for a partial second floor. For the first two floors i have used 12 columns all with 8 numbers of 16mm dia rods for both ground and first floors. The distance between any of those 12 columns is not more than 12 to 13 feet. The issue that i am facing is for the second floor i want to extend only 8 columns of the 9 available columns in the rear for making a large family living room because one of those column is coming in the centre of the living room. I just want to know if this is structurally possible by putting a heavy beam in the centre (marked in black line in attachment SF1)? The three columns in the front I am not extending them for second floor and stopping it in first floor and just having a balcony with a 3 feet parapet wall and no roof on the second floor. thx for the help in advance regards Praveen

Join date: Nov 2013 | Please note that column that i don't want is the one which is in the centre of the beam that I have proposed in attachment SF1.The 8 columns that I want to extend are the 3 columns immediately above and below along with one each on right and left. I am okay to put a beam of any depth and reinforcements to have this living.

Join date: Nov 2013 | Sir , Since I haven't received any reply just wanted to confirm one point. For a column span of 24 feet which has 8 rods of 16 mm dia would a beam of 12"*6" with 8 rods 16 mm dia be sufficient to hold a 5" roof and no floors on top ?

Join date: Mar 2008 | Dear parveen The size and steel given by you for 24' span seems to be on lesser side.

Join date: Nov 2013 | Thx sir for the response. Would a beam of 12 " * 12 " with 10 rods of 16 mm dia be okay ? if not then I am dropping this idea.

Join date: Mar 2008 | Dear Parveen In my opinion the size of beam should be 12''x18''including slab i.e. 13'' below slab and steel be 20 mm 6nos with 4 no 16 mm.
