| Topic: Concrete shelf?
In most city area house are constructed with concrete shelf. We live in town have also constructed our house with concrete shelf. Practically every bedroom and kitchen has concrete shelf. My question, is this an excellent idea or poor idea? what are the positive and negative about concrete shelf? It limits the bed from turning in one direction. Actually this is the way, one wants to place the bed. When someone enter the room, the first sight should be the feet. I learned this from gharexpert forum.
In kitchen I can understand it can be used for storage. But I found in our house the size of windows in kithen and dining room became smaller. Distribution of sunlight wasn't fantastic.
My brother has an idea of adding cabinet door to concrete shelf. Is this a good idea? I have mixed feeling about this idea. In kitchen I can live with cabinet doors but in bedroom I don't think so. What is your view? It would limit the size of object you can place in cabinet. Would the cabinet become smelly. Would the hinges break prematurely.
In the house we rented in India, the bedroom didn't have any cabinet door on concrete shelf. Neither did kitchen if I can remember correctly.
Any feedback will greatly be appreciated!

Dear Kanahaiya Ji,
Concrete shelf in bedroom and kitchen is a good idea. In bedroom concrete shelf can be used for placing decorative pieces. But if your bedroom is small concrete shelf is not a good idea. It will make room messy which doesn’t look nice. Concrete shelves are very useful in kitchen; these can be used for placing crockery, utensils and kitchen appliances. But you want big window in kitchen and dining room. You can have large window in kitchen and wall under the window can be used for storage unit. And concrete shelf can be on other two walls that can be used for storage. Cabinet door is also a good idea for concrete shelf that may help you to keep things out of reach to kids and pets. You are worried about that cabinet become smelly. It can be possible if there is dampness in house. It’s your choice to have cabinet doors in bedroom, if you do not require having it then its fine. It’s not necessary to have cabinet doors in bedroom. But cabinet doors in kitchen make the room look beautiful and arranged.

Usually the shelves are constructed either by concrete thin slabs, cuddapah or other stones cut to size or with ply woods.
Cuddapah stone : Preferably this should be avoided as it is brittle and liable to break under any impact moreover you cant drill any holes
Concrete thin slabs (precast) : This is most preferable
Plywood with veneer or laminate finish : Looks elegant and preferable provided we have enough budget for it. Blends well with cupboard with doors
Kitchen : concrete slab preferble and it is good to have doors for cup boards. Can use better space management by using storage below the kitchen platform and above it. This way, other walls with windows is not interupted.
Bedrooms: Doors preferred as the cloths will not be affected by pests and cockroaches so easily. Particularly if bedroom is viewable from living room it is good to have cupboard with doors. The doors can be simple PVC doors or plywood with decorative veneer/laminate finish.
Cheers!!

Join date: Oct 2008 | Thank you! Mister S L Gupta and Bana for the input.
One of the point I didn't mention is we ar NRI. We don't occupy the house for extended period of time.
But from your point of view, no harm done if we decide to put cabinet doors. In Gujarat dust and dirt gather quickly so it wouldn't be a bad idea to put in the cabinet doors.
Now I understand why we put the concrete shelf. to prevent kids and pet from reaching clothes and making mess.
Obviously the kitchen cabinet doors will be different from bedroom cabinet door.
I noticed from reading other post, the weakest part of cabinet door are its hinges. So know to look for some good quality hinges. In the west, I noticed the quality on new design hinges aren't that great. Choice of doors ar PVC or plywood, thans to Bana.
Once again thanks!
