|  Topic: I have read your articles regarding the strength of fresh cement,and how cement
I have read your articles regarding the strength of fresh cement,and how cement losses its strength as its gets older.However impementing this check with contractors is difficult since the cement bags nowadays from coromandel and Bharani , Chettinnad, only come marked with the year of manufacture, The month of manufacture is kept blank.Can you help me suggest what i should do. We are already in September and the cement bags only state that they were manufactured in 2012, we have no proof it is manufactured in January 2012, or June 2012 ????Pls suggest, This is a complaint that could be taken up at the consumer forum, as these companies are withholding, this information..My contractor tells me not to worry and informs that the cement will be fresh as nobody stocks cement bags for more than 2 months and cement is a fast moving item and so the chances of old stock is remote. I am not ready to buy this argument, as the dealers are only traders and they will want to make money....PLs advise... |

Join date: Mar 2008 | Dear George George, you are right, dealers are just trader and their intention is to make maximum money. But in the situation stated by you, where you have found that manufacturers are not printing month on the bags, you can take a few precautions to ensure cement of the latest production. It is right that cement is a fast moving item and most of the time you would order small quantities and the quality of each batch should be checked to ensure that the quality offered is good. If you are willing to spend some time on this procurement then you can accompany the contractor when he goes for cement purchase. At that time you should accompany the contractor to the shop of cement and talk about the stock of cement. After visually seeing the stock you would be able to asses the stock quality. As you are customer, the dealer can show you invoice for the cement he has purchased from the company. When you are ordering big quantity, dealers are willing to work with you. Also give some time at the time of loading and not take the bag which are in the lower most line.Some time when you are taking a big lot of cement at the time of laying RCC SLAB than you can ask the dealer to give the whole truck to you. Usually the dealers get the whole truck load in a batch of 600 bags so if your order is big or if you are 2 or 3 customers who can collectively order 600 bags then the cement can come directly to your site. Generally if there is enough construction going on in a given area then the prominent cement dealers would not have old stock lying around.
