|  Topic: Porch and bedroom on top having 1.5 m cantilever
My first floor bedroom is on car porch and is constructed on two beams extended from a wall and has a pillar on each beam. The length of the beam/room is 4.5 meter from the wall and the pillar is at 3 meter from the wall. which means the 1.5 meter of the porch roof/bedroom is on cantilever from the pillars.The bed room has standard wall thickness of 24 cm and has a height of 3 meter. The pillar is 8 inch square with 16 mm steel x 4 nos. The beam has 12 inch x 8 inch. has the slab of 5 inch at the top of the beam with in the 12 inch depth of the beam. Structure of house is completed and now the extended sunshade portion both side got cracks almost at the begining of cantilever from the pillar and also the crack is extended on the slab inside between the pillar ( when water poured from the top bedroom, there was seepage). The beam had 16 mm bars two at bottom and two at the top throughout the 4.5 m length and also had another 16 mm bar on top at cantilever side extended to almost 3 meter. Engineer said nothing to worry and he said the crack may develop a little more but it is not a structural failure. Please tell anything gone wrong?

I think that at the time of construction you are not get the structural design from structure engineer and rely on the advice of mason. We people made lacks of rupees on construction but not take structural design to save a small amount. Now you consult Engineer later on when defect arises. In my view after reading the contents of your problem.
1. the cantilever portion shuttering is not have outer edge up at least 1.5'' for avoiding the settlement and also you removed the shuttering before time.
2. The steel is on lesser side in the cantilever member which creates crack i.e. the MS steel is not enough to take load in the cantilever portion.
3. Not laying proper mix and ratio of cement concrete.
Precautions for Cantilever slabs and Beams
- While doing shuttering of a cantilever part, outer edge of shuttering is 1” to 2'' higher than inner edge with the wall.
- The bracing of vertical supports for cantilever portion should be tied to vertical supports of internal slab.
- The concrete should be laid on cantilever portion very gently.
- The shuttering should be removed after 28 days.

There was two more 16 mm rod additionally on both side throughout the length of the beam which I had not mentioned earlier ( Total 6 x16 mm plus one at the top middle up to 3m) There is 1.5 inch upward inclination given as you said Shuttering removed on 20th day Steel used was JSW and cement ultratech
As there is only crack on slab and not on the cantilever beam, can we consider it is not a structural failure? Or should I insist for another pillar? | | |
