Hello Sujay,
Let us first understand what is a beam. Beam is a structural member comprising of Steel and Concreet. Where is Steel (Iron) is in a good proportion.
Also if you have a Engineering background, You might very well know, when ever there is a change in Crossectional area there is a huge stress concentration that is formed where the cross section changes.
Thirdly, if you check with the Gynecalogist, when every a Lady is pregnant, they are prescibed with Iron and Calcium drugs. Iron helps to increase the circulation of the blood so that the blood can reach the baby in appropriate manner.
Now if we combine the above two theories. Beam means a change in cross section area and also concentration of steel (Iron) element. Both these combination form a high stress in that zone and hence you get disturbed under it.
If there is a prolong stay under such condition you know the results.
Let me put some logic when we say cover it with POP. Very first thing POP is not a natural material, its a bi product chemical. Apart from this if you stand in sun Naked, you will feel the heat in intense manner, but when you wear clother you will be comfortable for some time and again you will start feeling the heat. So in the initial period when you coer the beam with POP you will feel comfortable, but over a period of time you have to face the consuquences.
Vastu Shastra is a age old Engineering and there was logic behind every tenants that were mentioned. In Modern days people are not able to relate it and hence the problem.
Always look at Vastu Shastra from Engineering point of view and not Mythological point of view.

I definately agree with Gunas comments, If any one of you want to understand the impact of beam, Just try to place your 4 wheeler or a two wheeler under a beam for just a Months time.
If it is a 4 wheeler, place the engine portion of the car under the beam for more than a month. You can mail me your feedback on pmatkar@gmail.com.
This is a cost effective measure to understand the impact of beams.
