Dear Nuwan,
In the batching/ mixing process, the unit measurement of cement is one bag contains 50 kg cement and 0.035cum volume . The accurate method of batching should be by weight i.e. 50 kg of cement, 100 kg of coarse sand and 200 kg of coarse aggregate or stone ballast. But on small work weight-batching is not possible than volume batching is done i.e, one bag of cement/ 1.25 cft/ 0.035 cum of cement, 2.5 cft of coarse sand and 5 cft of coarse aggregate which are measured by box of 1’x1’x1.25’ = 1.25 cft. Technically there are three methods for testing water cement ratio i.e. slump test, compacting factor test and Vee- Bee consistency test. But on small work and in general observation, the mix should be stable there should not be the problem of segregation of material i.e. Coarse Aggregate and cement paste separate from each other, the other problem is bleeding i.e. water or water with cement comes at the surface of the concrete. These both problems create when there is excess water in the mix. The mix should be homogeneous, cohesive and mobile.

i am planning to buy a house built in a area where the gound water is extremely salty. The builder confirms that only potable water has been used. The building is now complete. How am i to verify what water has been used for building. Is there any possibility of finding. Assuming the builder has used salt water what would be the detrimental effects. | |
