Dear krish, What about the floor? Is it RCC flooring? Did you see any entry of tree root through the sump wall? NV Mani

Dear Mani,
thanks for you reply. For the floor, first we put big jelly stones(i think 40mm), on top of it muddy, on top of it concrete and during the last stages, one more layer of concrete mixed with waterproofing and then the final plastering.
no - no roots were detected. thru the sump wall.. there were some small roots while digging, which was the reason instead of just packing sand/mud between the sump brick wall and the outside, we packed the gap (about 3 or 4 inches) with concrete. this was done while the brick wall was being constructed for every 3 feet of brick wall was over, the packing with concrete was done.

Dear Krish, It is normal that water level in sump will drop to certain level, after water supply from mains stops(when filled level of water in sump is above inlet valve of supply). Some water from sump can go back to supply line. I have observed this in spite of provision of non-return valve. Is this applicable in your case? Regards, NV Mani

I understand about the water going back to supply line. But my concern is the water level is dropping even below the main inlet valve.
Am waiting for the water to be emptied (probably this weekend) and check the insides once more... any hints/tips on what to check ?

After reading your prpblem, I am in view that the joints of floor and walls have some leak point, prepare cement concrete gola and finished it with cement shullary.
ii. That either you have done plaster with fine sand or not it finished with cement floating coat.
iii. Either your masonary joints are hollow or you have not platered the wall external face if done than not finished with cement coat.
In future when you want to construct a sump than made cement concrete wall finished it on next day with cement coarse sand plaster and cement sullary.

what you call this sump? where it is RCC sump or brick sump, as i am little confused.
What i heard is RCC sump need , steel rod across the sump/laying/filling with concrete mix 1:2:4 of kind 4 sides/floor of sump as well, then plaster it with water proofing compound.
Current one is talking about mixing with concrete, does it qualify for RCC sump being steel mesh not used. I feel it is brick one with no mesh used. But Guptajui suggesting to use cement floating coat/cement shullary/cement concrete gola.
does this needed for brick sump with mesh/water proofing ?
Does this needed if i build a sump with RCC model with steel.
I need to ask my mason to construct based on your suggestion. Please explain cement floating coat/cement shullary/cement concrete gola as my mason may not know these things?
Regards Sam

Dear Sam
It is right that brick wall sump is equally good. For constrution of sump do some care that
1. After excavation, compact the bottom of sump.
2. Lay cement concrete and compact it fully.
3. Construct wall either RCC or brick wall but brick wall should be 9'' thick not 4.5'' with cement mortar. It must be ensure that pipe should be laid during the masonary not after by bracking the walls.
4. Do cement plaster on both side and finish it with cement shullary on the same day .
5 lay the flooring and finish it properly.
6. Do curing for at least 7 days. I think your dout is clear.Floating coat is finishing with cement mixed with water.

In our newly built house,we found that water leakage in sump. Sump constructed with brick and plastered.During the handover time of house , tiles fixed inside all five sides of the sump. First time i filled the sump and found that water level is decreasing rapidly.I contacted water proof guys through phone but they said that as tile is fixed inside the wall and built with brick we need to spend money equal to cost of newly building sump. And he suggested to demolish the existing and construct with RCC.
It will be helpfull if you suggest on this.

Hi, I am Aslaan Malik from bangalore, india...first let me tell my experience in repairing leaking water sumps...Although i am engineer but i repaired our two sumps mentioned below in details.. First you have to notice from where u r tank is leaking, by noticing tank level every day. Our 13 yrs old sump started leaking 10-12 inches every day in 2011, its nearly 500 ltrs every day....so what i did is, when there was no water in the tank i took a good torch and inspected and what i found is around 25-30 holes...i will tell you how i repaired it.
We constructed our new tank in January 2014...In beginning our constructors said its a new tank so it drinks water, just wait for few days it will be fine, but even after one month it did not stopped every day more than 500 ltrs was leaking.... Here also i took torch & i inspected and found crack in wall and holes below every plastic-rubber steps...
So what is the solution...I fixed it in Just Rs.60...shocked here is the solution.. 1)you must be heard of M-Seal which u can easily found in any hardware shops, buy it as per your requirement. 2)It comes in two solutions u have to mix it, just follow the instructions on m-seal box. 3)clean the surfaces where u have to apply m-seal, like cracks or holes. 4)now apply m-seal, but dont use water, if its very hard u may use just 2 or 3 drops water.make sure all holes or cracks are filled, for better fillings use u r thumbs and gently press the m-seal. 5)leave for drying for atleast 6 hrs, fill tank and check u r problem solved. Thanks Mohammed Aslaan Malik
