The residence for Mr. Subbu was planned in Palavakkam, Chennai. The residence has a built-up area of 6000 sft. The major constrains were to design a residence that blends harmoniously with its surroundings without being dominated by the relatively narrow site. The client wanted a clean facade with minimal projections and massing. The planning involved designing spaces with multiple configurations that allowed flexibility and facilitated smooth transition between spaces. The design uses pure geometric forms to enhance experience inside and out of the house.
The ground floor is planned as an open interactive family zone that brings the visual connection between areas of related functions. The ground floor spaces moves from formal drawing room to family living room which parallels the kitchen - dining spaces and puja room. The utility room can be accessed from outside, while the store room is accessible from inside. The building sits at 50ft from the frontage and at 3oft from the rear-end, giving ample space for landscape and family zone. The landscape in the rear incorporates a gazebo with a zen garden.
The corridor that provides access to the staircase and the bedroom on the ground floor also provides access to the sit out on the ground floor. The intersection of voluminous spaces, frames the vertical circulation area that is treated specially. The first floor is planned with three bedrooms having an attached balcony each, a family room and a home theater. Large french doors have been planned at multiple faces of the building facilitating abundant light and air for its inhabitants. The site contains were solved with prior planning of spaces and analyzing the volumetric models, thus making it more effective during the construction process. |
