Fifty year old Sony centre is redesigned as because the Performing Arts boast the new Tower apartments, new arts and culture facility that are to be combined with the Centre’s existing theater. The entire building will present a new strategy for 21st Century living so that inner city life can actively be integrated with arts and culture.
SDL’s design proposal is cultural component of L Tower and Sony Centre since the Performing Arts Redevelopment is conceptually involved into the programmatic and experiential intentions of the ArtsLab. The proposal achieves its goal through formal and spatial strategy shown through a central void in the building. The communal space in form of semi-sphere is a cultural center, symbolic and useful and reminds global cultural diversity in Toronto.
The residential tower consists of the majority (428,000 sq.ft.) of the overall redesign. The building is located as the best cultural facility, will take approximately 470 units and rise to a height of 57 stories. It will offer stunning views over downtown Toronto and Ontario. The Tower will not only be the icon of the city skyline for Sony Centre but for cultural institutions within the city also.
