RMJM, lead architect designs Waterfront Building under the supervision of Turner and Townsend for phase two of University Campus Suffolk. The university consists of three elements that are expected to be complete within next five years. The two of three buildings are residences of students whereas one of them is an academic building. The first bock consists of residences/apartments for 600 students, retail units, and a car park for 100 spaces managed by UCS.
The first module of the building started in January 2009 under the supervision of Watkin Jones Group is expected to be complete till September 2010 and will provide accommodation for Faculty of Health, Wellbeing and Science in addition to an innovative ‘iLab’, general teaching and study space and Student Union facilities. The next modules are planned to offer extensive library and learning resources besides general teaching, specialist and additional student facilities.
The second trance of UCS development also consists of renovation work for the existing Campus North accommodation. The refurbishment work includes a number of measured improvements, with a refurbishment program planned to commence once Suffolk New College has moved into their new further education building. This work is expected to complete in July 2009.
Peter Williams, Project Director at RMJM says “After the immense success of the Waterfront Building at UCS, we are delighted to have unveiled our approved plans for the future growth of UCS. Phase One set the standard for construction in the area and revealed the future shape of student life in Ipswich. We are confident that the buildings designed for University Quays, and earmarked for refurbishment at Campus North, will raise the bar even further.”
