Norwegian practice architects designs a mobile pavilion, one of three finalists in a competition by Yorkshire Forward. The pavilion is constructed from a network of inflatable tubes having the design of atomic structure of diamonds. The winning pavilion will be situated at various sites in Yorkshire and Humberside, UK and would be used for small gatherings or large events such as film screenings or concerts.

The Yorkshire Diamond Pavilion is a distinctive and iconic place to represent Yorkshire Forward for events around Yorkshire and Humber or the world. The pavilion is a centre of attraction with a conspicuous exterior having inflatable tubes in form of atomic structure of the diamonds. The diamond grid volume of 20 x 26 x 10 meters creates spacious interior reminiscent of the coalmines of Yorkshire. The light and airshafts provides natural light and ventilation to the structure.

The pavilion has innovative features as the structure can generate energy using solar panels during the transportation and installation and light recyclable materials would show Yorkshire Forward’s commitment to the environment. The new uses of the existing technologies make the design of this pavilion produce and work at a reasonable price. The Diamond Pavilion being lightweight reduces the travel weight and packing volume and decreases the carbon footprints for transportation of the pavilion as well.

The Pavilion uses tested inflatable technology that consists of pressurized tubes in a new and stunning way. The diamond lattice structure creates a stable 3D superstructure surrounding the project. It adds stability to a number of domed shapes that create a triangular network of tubes with dual-layer inflated cushions on each side to provide in-plane rigidity. The outer translucent cushion gives visibility while the inner layer with white blackout fabric allows inner space to be darkened during the day. A 2m x 2m flooring grid having adjustable legs provides a stable base for the project.
