Frederick Fisher and Partners, the architects from Los Angeles designed a family home in California’s Santa Ynez Valley. The residence spread over 20 acre land offers the landscape with extensive sights of nearby mountains and valleys. The owners’ square paintings and the interest of the firm in ‘square and box’ created initial concepts for residential home which was completed in 2006.
The home is 7000 square feet family residence which is based on a grid of 25 squares. The single family residence with 100 x 100 feet area is built around central courtyard which divides the building into three distinct “zones” - living, sleeping and working. During summer months, three outdoor rooms extend the living space giving benefits of warm climate.
Large sliding glass panels create interior and exterior views of the buildings. The inner courtyard of building protects residents from severe wind and scorching sun giving pleasant, tranquil and thoughtful views of landscape. The building is located next to natural grasses, shrubs and trees. The home covered entirely in corrugated Cor-ten steel has been painted in a rich brown color as it oxidizes harmonizing with its earthy environment. The perforated Cor-ten steel is used for sun shading glass and covers areas adding a play of light across the surfaces of homes. Large sliding and swinging steel gates enclose home at night while the owners are away on travel.
