Architects Martha Schwartz Partners designed the grounds for Qatar Petroleum headquarters in Doha. The design consists of artificial mounds made of stabilized sand and gravel mix, gardens and water features.
Worldwide famous landscape architects Martha Schwartz Partners working closely with architects Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) design a striking landscape ground for the Qatar Petroleum head quarters in Doha. The architects have created striking contrast within the landscape by showing an abundant and green oasis in headquarters. This duality of the landscape provides an aesthetic sharing of energy resources.
The sculpted geometry within the headquarters is expanded into the landscape through a series of sandbanks that curve around roads and lead to the headquarters. These weather resistant dunes being comprised of stabilized sand and gravel mix provide past driving site with rich aesthetic beauty and emphasize on the shape of desert as well.
The ribbon gardens draw the green of oasis out into the desert, gradually becomes more attractive towards the edge of the site away from protective micro climate of the buildings. Oasis garden spaces are also an essential characteristic of the landscape master plan, happening near recreational spaces, corporate training centers and car parks. The oasis gardens refer to the oasis having water features and crop planted areas adding the sense of texture and intimacy.
Martha Schwartz, Head of Martha Schwartz Partners says, “As one of the major workplaces in Doha, we felt it was crucial to go beyond international design language and make the public realm specific to the area. The oasis, dunes and plants will create a truly striking visual display, while retaining a sense of cohesion with the hardscape.
“I always relish the opportunity to work on projects like this in the Middle East; clients tend to be really willing to try new ideas and I think this project is really symbolic of that open-mindedness.”
