A thing of peace and honor matters everywhere. Wilmotte & Associés SA, the architects has proved it by designing a UN Peace Centre in honor of General Secretary of the UNO, Ban Ki Moon in Chungju, South Korea. The project spreading out along the banks of the river Namhangang and to the north of Natural Park Tangeumdae will be new cultural landmark for the city. This cultural building finishes into the design of new UN Memorial Hall creating an innovative structure.
The UN Peace Center is an ellipsoidal building having a maximum diameter of 60m. It includes eight storey and one basement floor. The centre of building is 1,500 seat auditorium and auxiliary conference space. The auditorium presents a view to the outside direction of Tangeumdae Natural Park. The spiraling upwards, continuous ramp houses and an exhibition enlighten the history of the United Nations from 1945 till present. The center of the United Nations mission is the main character and integral part of the architecture and appearance of the UN Globe which is to be placed in an orchard of 192 apple trees representing the number of member states of the UN. The central point of the building in miniature and in the heart of the site has been defined as the epicenter of concentric orbits which create a unifying surface for different events of the park, like the Stone Collection (Suseok), the research center, and a number of other follies. The building concludes into the Gallery of General Secretaries.
