If you are looking for ecological, sustainable or green landscape architecture and like to stop flooding and sewer overflows, landscape architects can design the same architecture of your choice. These structural designs are good for providing fresh air and clean water. Such architectures recharge an aquifer and rebuild a shoreline or remediate a brownfield. They minimize highway pollution and rebalance watershed or ecosystem.
A landscape architect is a design professional who can fulfill the dream of making environmentally friendly architecture. He has more importance than a glorified gardener in making the environment clean. The making of such architecture is called performance-based, ecological, sustainable or green landscape architecture. Some people use the term “landscape infrastructure” or “landscape urbanism” for this architecture.
“This form of landscape architecture harks back to the profession’s roots. In a decade, it has gone from “obscurity to mainstream,” says David Yocca, a principal in the Elmhurst, Ill., office of Conservation Design Forum, a planner, landscape designer and engineer.
“This dramatic change signals a comeback for a group that had lost its way in the 1980s and 1990s. During that time, within the profession, there was a “backlash against environmentalism and a view that the environmental movement had shorted esthetic concerns,” says Fritz Steiner, dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas, Austin. On the contrary, “environmentalism and esthetics are complementary,” he says.
“Landscape architecture, a discipline that combines nature, culture and technology, in no measure eliminates the engineer from the equation. “We have to move forward holistically,” integrating design and engineering, says Bert Gregory, CEO of Mithun, a Seattle-based architect, landscape architect and planner.
Landscape architects are helping in making environment hygienic and beautiful, from green roofs and green streets to harbors and watersheds, from exurbs to “urbs,” They are applying a combination of natural and engineered systems, including soil bio-filtration and carbon sequestering to clean water and air.
