Eric Parry Architecture Firm won two awards from British Council in an award ceremony held on 7th October 2008.
The architectural firm describes the project as below.
"In June 2001 we were appointed to propose and develop a masterplan and building design for the site of the existing Royex House adjacent to London Wall. Following analysis of the vehicular and pedestrian routes through the site, a scheme was developed to create a new public space connecting Wood Street and Aldermanbury Square with access to the Barbican High Walk.
The new 18-storey building raised above the public space consists of two staggered wings divided by a receding central section that allows light to penetrate into the triple height ground floor reception space. The facades are formed in shot-peened stainless steel cladding enclosing all perimeter structure within a double height arrangement, the pattern of the cladding grid accentuates the vertical.
The vast reception space mediates between the public space outside and the entrance to the lift lobby. The space contains woven enamelled metal wallhangings and hand-knotted carpets designed by EPA, as well as bespoke reception furniture items and lighting.
Detailed consultations with the Corporation of London developed the brief and arrangement for the new public space, funded by a Section 106 agreement, creating a public pedestrian route at ground level across the site of the building."
