I suggest u to have reflective paint i.e paints having glossy finish and of lighter colour which can reflect light....
u can use down lighters for the slab area to illuminate the working space...if u r having upper shelves than this is the best way to get maximum lights.. |

From your question it is presumed that the ceiling of your kitchen room is of wooden batten /beams and due this you have lighting problem. 1) You can fix tube light in the bottom of the beam which can solve the problem. 2) You can paint the wooden beam/batten with the white paint which helps in lighting problem. 3) If you want more better look then provide false ceiling and the ceiling should be painted with white paint. The light points may be fixed below ceiling or on the walls. Which will give better look and helps in lighting problem.
