The reasons of hairline cracks in cement plastering are following.
• Shrinkage due to the use of rich mortar
• Inadequate curing
• Lack of bond with background due to joints not being racked
• Sulphate attack
• Very fine or silt mixed sand used in cement mortar
• Plastering done during hot hours
• Direct in sun rays
• Mixed background i.e. discontinuity in background is prone to cause cracking of plaster.
Prevention of hairline cracks in cement plaster
• Use of coarse and silt free sand.
• Rack the joints of brick masonry properly. If there is RCC surface, make it rough by chiseling.
• Clean dust from the surface with wire brush properly.
• Cure the surface under plaster properly at least 24 hours before starting the plaster.
• Do not plaster during hot hours.
• Do plaster on shady wall which is not in direct contact of sun rays in hot weather.
• Do proper curing after plaster and keep plaster surface wet for at least seven days.
• Make grooves in plaster between two different backgrounds if background of the surface has discontinuity.
