Dear Jyothi,
South-East is the best direction for kitchen and other average effect direction is North-East. This is also mentioned in an article ‘Vastu for Kitchen’ at GharExpert it self. The link of article is below:-

Join date: May 2013 | Dear Jyoti g, No doubt that according to Vaastu guidelines South - East is the best direction for Kitchen and next best alternative is North-West , but the internal layout should be same as for South-East placement. In case , you are placing the stove in WEST direction , than to minimize the ill-effects of this direction , fix a looking mirror on the west wall [ 12" x 15" or 12" x 12" ],which will give the feeling of correct direction i.e EAST facing. Amit Hasija ji , sorry , your suggestion for Kitchen in North-East , other than South -East is against the facts of Vaastu guidelines. North-East as well South - West are prohibited for use as Kitchen area.

Join date: May 2013 | Agreed. Kitchen in NE is a big vastu defect. In case the kitchen is placed in NW, cook should be facing east direction. Looking mirrors on west mirror is recommend when we have door at the back. Looking mirrors are recommend only on East or North walls.
