R.C.C. column in Sqft

I am handling a construction of new temple, not from starting. i handle that from ground floor and That work is given for two local contractor as an item wise labour contract. they quoted the rate of R.C.C column and beam in unit sqft and measuring the surface area of beam and column(including steel and centering work).  For eg: column having 24"X24" of height 4'. they measuring 2+2+2+2= 8 adding four side and the multipying with height (2+2+2+2)X4=32sqft. I dont think that is correct way of measuring. please suggest us how to correct this problem. i told them they should calculate in cuft). they are not listening......................
