| Topic: RCC Column Construction
Dear Shri Gupta,
First of all, allow me to CONGRATULATE YOU, it is a stupendous job that you are doing, dispensing such wonderful advice gratis to all of us !! Marvellous indeed !!
I have the following queries:
I have recently started construction of my house in NOIDA (renovation and extension actually). Footing work of pillars has been done and pedestal work is about to be started. I find that the four vertical bars (16mm) are twisted in the vertical plane to about 20-25 degrees. At the base, the toe of the vertical bars were properly aligned - all in one direction, but at GL height they appear twisted. If I rotate the tie ring horizontally, the four bars now appear properly aligned at right angles to the boundary. The contractor says that he will correct this twist while casting the pillar by twisting and holding it during the moulding process, but this would introduce a torsion in the bars. Is the torsion OK or would it cause structural problems later? I may mention that the pillar design is at one edge of the isolated column foundation since our house is a middle house in a row of houses and hence the neighbour's wall did not permit isolated pillars in the middle of the foundation that is normally done. The middle pillar is also skewed to one end of the foundation because of a manhole. Hence all three pillars are at one edge of the foundation (6x4).
Thank you

Join date: Feb 2014 | Dear Anuj, Bars should be straight. All structural engineers consider straight bars in their design. However their are some more factors like rotation (moment) act on rcc pillar, minimum bars lapping distance , position of lapping btw pillars, tie ring design so on and so on...all structural constrain shall be supervised and approved by qualified structural engineer.

Join date: Mar 2008 | Dear Anuj What I under stand is that during foundation laying of columns the position of MS steel bars are disturbed and not truly in vertical in plumb. Now as per your contractor he wants to twist the bar on footing. It is difficult to tell remedy without seeing the problem at site. However tie 16 mm bar with this twisted rod WITH L-SHAPE MS rod having at least 3' vertical bar with L at bottom 9'' to 12'' and after cleaning the already laid concrete, lay new !;1.5; 3 cement concrete base at least 4'' to 6'' and than lay the pedestal. But I still advice if any civil engineer inspect the site, he will give good advice.
