As stated by you that the problem arises after renovation work. Some waste material filled in the pipe. You should contact any plumber who can solve your problem.

thanks for the response Mr Gupta. i don't think it started after renovation because this bathroom was more or less unaltered. we just moved the washing machine in and did the necessary wiring for that. the outlet was connected to the existing drain point. in this context, i think i should mention, the washing machine was earlier placed in the work area and connected to a similar drainage too. on removing the machine from its earlier place, we saw laundry dirt accumulated on the floor (which was not visible while the machine was there). so i suspect a back flush there too.
my doubt now is, are normal drainage (like the ones we usually have in the corner of the bathrooms in Indian houses) capable of draining such huge volumes of water like that from a washing machine in one go? as i mentioned, i had other people telling me they have the same issue when their machines empty to the bathroom drainage. thanks in advance

Hi, I am no expert but could think of this solution. Attach a smaller pipe through an adaptor to the water-outlet tube (available with your washing machine seller). Make sure the smaller pipe is lenghty. Check with your plumber who might give you a more practical solution since he can check at your premises. Regards

thanks solomon. that sounds practical, will surely try it out. had been thinking of reducing the outflow with some obstructions over the outlet (like partially covering the mouth with a cloth or something). but if the solution u told works, it'd be better. hope the machine service centre has a smaller one available.
