When you want to make wooden ceiling, it should be ensure that all timber used in the ceiling shall be graded as first grade timber and knots should be avoided over a specified limit The timber used in the frame for ceiling and the boards shall be class of the timber as detailed below.
The timber shall be free from decay, fungal growth, boxed heart, pitch pockets or streaks on the exposed edges, splits and cracks. The timber shall be graded as first grade timber and knots should be avoided over a specified limit.
For proper utility of timber in various climatic conditions, it is necessary to ensure control on moisture content of timber. It should be ensure that all timber used in the ceiling shall be thoroughly seasoned in accordance with IS 1141. After seasoning the timber shall be treated with preservative in accordance with IS:401. The timber shall be treated with anti termite chemical treatment.
The recommended size of wooden boards for ceiling is as under:-
Only selected boards of uniform width and thickness shall be used for wooden ceiling. Minimum width of selected board shall not be less than 100mm. The maximum width of selected board shall not be more than 150mm. The maximum length of selected board shall not be more than 180 cm. The minimum length of the board depends on the arrangement on the lines of heading joints. Try to keep same width once selected between these two limits of the board throughout the room except where the width of the room is not an exact multiple of the board.
The difference of width shall be equally adjusted between the two boards adjacent with walls i.e. first and last lines. The minimum length of the boards in the finished work shall be such that the board shall rest at least on two spacing of the supporting frames except where otherwise carried out to the pattern specified in the drawings. The usual thickness of the board is 19mm to 25 mm. The chosen board /wood have decorative grain and attractive natural color. The board shall be planned true on the exposed side. The longitudinal joints of the planks shall be tongued and grooved to a minimum depth of 12mm.
The heading joints shall be of the square butt type and shall occur over centerline of the supporting joists.
