The pump is at the heart of the fountain. There is always a limit to the height to which a pump can push water. As this height increases along with pipe length so the flow decreases and the effect can diminish along with it. Today, a lot of fountain pump are available in the market. The type of pump depends greatly upon the type of fountain you have.

1. Direct Drive Pumps:
This type of pumps was very common in the past. They are for medium to large size fountains. The motor of this type of pump is enclosed (covered) in an oil-filled waterproof shell that is well-sealed around the impeller shaft and cord.

2. Magnetic Drive pumps:
The impeller is attached to a magnet therefore these pumps are called magnetic drive pumps. The chief advantage of this design is that the wiring is sealed off from the moving parts. Water and electricity are kept apart by a solid plastic wall.

Most small plastic pumps are of the mag-drive type. These pumps are less powerful than the direct-drive pumps but more prone to jamming.
3. Solar Powered Pumps:
Solar powered pumps are a great option for such places where there is no electricity. And because these pumps do not require electricity, they are relatively easy to install, too. Solar powered fountain pumps consist of a low voltage pump and a solar panel.
4. Submersible Fountain Pump:
This is the most popular type of water pump for fountain making. These fountain pumps are inexpensive and contain no oils as they are water cooled. Never take submersible water pump out of the water because it can cause immediate and permanent damage.
Note: It is always wise to select a pump that is more powerful than you require. Use a flow valve to control its output.
